Sant Joan Festival

Sant Joan Festival takes place on the shortest night of the year. This festival not only celebrates the beginning of summer but also one of the most important feast days for Catalans. First of all, if you are in the city during this time, you will definitely not miss the celebrations. One can notice bonfires and fireworks throughout the city this evening. The idea derived from the fact that sun is symbol of fertility and wealth. And by celebrating the highest point of sun, gives strength. Another interesting belief is that Sant Joan symbolizes fire, water and herbs. Fire for purity and hence the bonfires. Water for healing and therefore people bathe in the sea. And finally, herbs represent healing and as a result, herbs are picked on this night for its healing properties.

Sant Joan brings families and friends together. Since Barcelona’s architecture includes balconies and terraces, families gather around on balcony with best view and enjoy the evening with food, drinks and music. If you head to Barcelona with your friends or yourself, get ready to meet a lot of new people at the beach where musicians and drummers, along with sumptuous food. Most of all, top your evening with brilliant fireworks in the sky. Furthermore, if you want to spend some time away from the beach, then head to the hills nearby, at Montjuic castle and view firework display all over the city. If fire, water, herbs, food, drinks, music and fireworks combines to one party and this calls you, then Sant Joan is not to be missed!
