Every year between late September and early October, more than 6 million people from around the world crowd the streets of Munich. They all gather to celebrate Oktoberfest, the world’s largest Volksfest (literally ‘peoples’ festival’). Oktoberfest visitors are usually dressed in a traditional Bavarian outfit, Lederhosen, and Drindl. Large tents, accommodating thousands of guests, provide a wide variety of locally brewed beers throughout the festival. Last year, these tents served more than 7 million liters of beer!

Although beer is the main theme, Oktoberfest visitors also experience a mixture of other attractions such as amusement rides, games, and a wide variety of traditional Bavarian food. It is a gastronomic paradise especially for meat lovers to relish Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages), Brezen (pretzel) and many other Bavarian specialties.

Munich, the heart of the Bavarian capital, celebrates Oktoberfest at a central location, Theresienwiese. This area also conveys the history of Oktoberfest. On 12th October 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese and celebrated his wedding with the citizens of Munich. The celebration took place in a field near the city gate. Since then, this field is known as Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s meadow”). And locals refer to this place as Wiesn, which is synonymous to Oktoberfest.

Munich is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. Bavarian capital has it all! Besides beer and traditional atmosphere, it has a rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes. Visitors can explore castles, palaces, museums and art galleries. Nature lovers can also relax in picturesque parks on the banks of river Isar, gaze at crystal clear waters of various lakes surrounding Munich or escape to The Alps.
