Every year in February, the people of northern Tawang celebrate Losar festival. Losar festival represents the New Year of Monpas and is the region’s most popular festival. Monpas is a major ethnic group of Tawang. Before the festival begins, local people clean their homes and throw away all unused and old things. Because they believe that such ritual brings them and their families good health, peace, and prosperity.
During Losar festival, Monpa tribal people dressed in colorful clothes on the streets of Tawang. On the first day of the festival, they give roast buttered Barley as offerings to deities. And everybody prays for a good harvest. On the second day, people honor their national leaders and country heroes. On the third day, people honor the Buddhist deity Dharmapala. And hoist red prayer flags over every house. Various celebration activities continue for one to two weeks. The Monpas get together with their friends and relatives and feast grandly.
