Hornbill Festival, Kohima, Nagaland, India

Every year in early December, Hornbill festival attracts people from North East India and from around the globe. All gather in a small and picturesque village of Kisama, where one finds the diversity of tribes, tradition, and modernity. Hornbill festival represents many local tribes coming together in this beautiful place for a week-long festivity.

The festival provides an opportunity to experience rich and diverse culture from the state of Nagaland! The event gives a glimpse of colorful performances, traditional sports, games, delicacies at food fairs and awareness of traditional ceremonies. Visitors can also explore Kohima Night Bazaar or witness King Chilly Eating Contest. One must also not miss traditional arts such as paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures. Nagaland, India

Nagaland is located in the North East corner of India, also known as ‘Switzerland of the East‘. Although Nagaland is a small state, it is home to 16 major tribes! The people of Nagaland are proud of its cultural richness and promote their culture through various activities. Hornbill festival is one of such initiatives. Local people practice various kinds of crafts such as weaving, pottery, metalwork and jewelry.

Besides cultural wonders, Nagaland is also a land of stunning natural landscapes. It’s a mountainous area, hosting a great variety of flora and fauna. Hornbill festival gets its name after an important Indian bird species. This bird is an important figure in the social and cultural life of the people of Nagaland. Day 1

We greet you at Guwahati Airport and take you to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. There we go for a Jeep Safari to spot one horned Rhinoceros, an endangered rhino breed indigenous to the state of Assam. Later, we travel to Mayong, a place once famous for black magic in India. It is no longer practiced, however, the Mayong museum gives provides an opportunity to see the relics of it. On the way back, we stop by at Burha Mayong to visit the longest Stone inscription in Asia (3.85 meters). In the evening, we reach homestay, your overnight accommodation, where bonfire and traditional Bodo dinner awaits you.

Day 2

We wake up early morning and visit Kamakhya Temple, situated atop the Nilachal hills. After breakfast, we travel to Dimapur, which is a long six hour drive. After reaching Dimapur, you can relax at the hotel.

Day 3,4 and 5

Festival days! In the morning, we travel to Kohima, where we first visit the famous war cemetery. Later, we go to Kisama Heritage village to join the Hornbill Festival! We will also visit nearby tribal villages to experience rural life in Nagaland.

Day 6

  We travel to Mokokchung, a picturesque town located at an altitude of 1325 meters above sea level. Mokokchung is the cultural center of the Ao tribes of Nagaland. And Ao Nagas are famous for their colorful dances. In the evening, you can relax at the hotel.

Day 7

We wake up early and explore the local area. Then, we visit Mopongcuket to see beautiful wood carving and vanguard village of Longkhum. Aos tribes have a belief that Longkhum is the resting place of the dead on their onward journey to paradise. We will also visit Ungma village, the largest settlement of Ao tribes. As per legend, early Aos, who came from Chungliyimti, first settled here. Later, we will travel to Jorhat and relax at a hotel.

Day 8

After breakfast, we will accompany you till Jorhat airport, for your onward destination. Bid Adieu!
